KSD News

Dear KSD Community,

In the months ahead, there are new initiatives on the horizon as well as new opportunities for our community. As we address these district level shifts we must remember that at the core of our operations are the people. Our students, our staff, and our parents/guardians. It is the community that makes us the KSD and by staying informed we will be more equipped and prepared to maximize the potential of each and every one of our stakeholders.

See below for pertinent information!

Take good care,

District Announcements

Interested in being a KSD Board of Trustee?

On Tuesday, May 17 at 6 p.m., the KSD will host a School Board Trustee orientation at the KSD District Office, 750 College Ave. The event will share more about the role and responsibility of a School Board Member. Every public school district is governed by a board of trustees, commonly known as the school board. These boards of trustees are representative of their community, putting the interest of students' futures first. This November three seats will be open for election.

School Meals for All

Beginning in the 2022-23 school year the KSD will be required to provide all children access to a nutritious school meal. The purpose of this program is to establish a foundation for a lifetime of healthy behaviors, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, and support cognitive development and academic success. The KSD is in the process of requesting a public bid for proposals for the district's school food program. This new requirement does not bring additional state funding but does provide flexibility to request a donation to access meals. More information to follow.

Universal Transitional Kindergarten

In the fall of 2022 the KSD will provide a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program for KSD students who turn 5 between September 2, 2022 and February 2, 2023. The program will be a new grade level for our students and will operate at our Bacich School site. The KSD will receive one-time start up funds to assist with planning and implementation of this new grade level. The program will expand over the next 4 years increasing attendance while offering our youngest learners an opportunity to be on a comprehensive elementary school site. This new program provides access to a strong preschool foundation for all age-eligible children.

Family Partners Meeting:

This Tuesday, April 26, 4-5 p.m., Sam Drazin of Changing Perspectives returns to Family Partners to talk about strategies to support our students with socio-emotional learning. The presentation can be accessed at in-person meeting at the district office 750 College Ave or via Zoom. The link is being sent via Parent Square.

ANNOUNCING California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), 2022

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, or CAASPP, is the standardized academic testing that students across the state take every spring. After a pause for the last two springs due to the pandemic the state is returning to requiring Districts to administer CAASPP testing this year in an effort to provide valuable information about student progress. This tool is an online, computer-adaptive assessment in English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA) and Mathematics for 3rd - 8th grade students. In addition, the California Science Test will be required to be administered to all 5th and 8th grade students beginning in 2022.

KSD 3rd - 8th grade students may participate in the CAASPP testing between May 2 - June 3rd. See the site specific CAASPP testing calendars here - Kent CAASPP Testing calendar and Bacich CAASPP Testing calendar. To learn more, please read last week's newsletter.
